Being Active
Population Outcome: People in Suffolk and North East Essex are Active
Being physically active improves our ability to do everyday activities. It can reduce the risk of major illnesses, including coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer and lower the risk of early death by almost a third. It’s also good for our brains – it can boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing stress, clinical depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

What we know matters and why
What matters? | Why? |
I am healthier through an active life | Being more active can improve my wellbeing, stamina and strength, and may reduce reliance on some treatments. |
I know what types of activity can help me be healthy | Recognising that activity does not just mean structured exercise enables me to incorporate movement into my life more easily. Guidance from experts in my health conditions enables me to be more active in a safe way. |
I can access activities in my community | Affordable activities, available at times and in places convenient to me, increase opportunities for me to exercise regularly. |
I am treated as an individual | Understanding the practical, social, economic and emotional barriers to being active means that advice and support to be more active is better tailored to my needs. A non-judgemental attitude means I am not stigmatised or feel blamed, which deters me from being more active. Taking time to explore with me how I can be more active, and giving me meaningful choices, means I can be more confident that I can achieve my goals. |
