Public health
The Faculty of Public Health defines public health as ‘the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health and wellbeing, through the organised efforts of society.’ Public health professionals are employed in local government, the NHS, businesses and at national level. They work to protect and improve the public’s health with a focus on reducing health inequalities, prevention of ill health, influencing wider policy decisions that have health impacts, and protecting the public from communicable disease outbreaks and other large-scale health threats.
